Let’s play a game. It’s called, “Where’s the best sandwich in Boston?” Now, I’ve been in Boston for a total of two days, and I’m pretty confident I’m already on a winner.

Parish Cafe is most easily found in your standard Lonely Planet guide to USA, but don’t let that get you down. The “rotating roster of salads and sandwiches, each designed by a local celebrity chef” will leave you spoilt for choice, but if you’re still not satisfied, the bar offers a daunting range of local and imported beers, and fantastic cocktails. But I know you’re here for the food, so let’s show you what we ate:

Steak and Blue, by Lydia Shire

Melt in your mouth steak, seared rare to perfection, meets thick cut blue cheese toast and Roquefort butter. Sounds great on paper, tastes even greater. If anything, the red marinated onions are an unnecessary afterthought, overshadowed by the creamy, crumbly cheese. Luckily the steak is generously distributed, and balances like Philippe Petit on a wire.

Just look at that steak!!!!!

No seriously it’s amazing, full of flavour and so soft your grandma needn’t bother with her dentures.

The Dbar, by Chris Coombs

Juicy veal cutlet breaded in a herb and garlic crumb, bursting with flavour beneath a mountain of tomato-caper relish, smoked applewood bacon and gooey gruyere. Coleslaw or potato salad are a must to balance out this sticky, salty, hot mess with some cold, creamy relief. Eating this is pure bliss.

Elephant Walking on Eggs, by Gerard Lopez

THE fluffiest goat’s cheese and vegetable omelette in a pillowy-soft-yet-crusty baguette gives you instant Paris bistro in the heart of Boston’s Back Bay. Not more needs to be said about this subtle, stupendous vegetarian delight.

Bowl-O-RIngs (half serve)

Half-serve??? Already down a couple compadres due to starving, breakfast-skipping diners (read: me), these juicy, crunchy onion rings could’ve fed a family of five, no worries. Maybe this is standard American excess, but believe me, this sure beats skimpy Sydney serves for $19.95. That chipotle mayo ain’t no slouch either, packing a pretty punch.

Tequila Toddy

Drambuie, hot apple cider, Patrón, cranberry. Served hot with lime.

Drink, fall in love, repeat.

Sandwiches, sides, spirits, and top-shelf service.
